Hello, nashwest Besties

In the Company of Cowgirls

Who can call themselves a cowgirl? Let’s refer to the Queen of the cowgirls, Dale Evans, who famously said, “Cowgirl is an attitude, really; a pioneer spirit, a special American brand of courage.”

Women earning wages from cow work are an elite and small percentage of the ranching industry but they are there, absolutely dedicated to their craft and definitely ding the bell at the top of the cool-o-meter. Memorably, I had stopped at a gas station in Nevada’s lonely Great Basin region when two young women sauntered in, tall buckaroo boots with spurs jingling, palm hats pulled to their eyebrows and a light powdering of dust from eyelashes to the leather work gloves stuffed into their back pockets. They knew they were bad ass and I may sing about cowboy life but these gals were living it.

I don’t exactly know how the lowly herdsmen of the wide open spaces of the American West became the worldwide symbol of freedom and an independent spirit, but I suppose John Wayne and the Hollywood machine contributed to the image. The black and white versions of the women of the West on the silver screens were perfectly coiffed and relegated to being rescued, so it’s very insightful of Dale Evans to recognize a deeper definition of what a “cowgirl” is and to recognize that admirable qualities of the cowboy character cross gender lines.

When I first began writing songs about my life in the rural West, I largely felt like an imposter sharing the stage with the greats such as Baxter Black, Belinda Gail, Sons of the San Joaquin and Don Edward and so many others. I knew I was somehow thrown into a world that was special among artists that authentically understood and loved cowboy culture and had dedicated themselves to this remote corner of American folk music. In the company of these modern day troubadores, I learned my craft and was gently welcomed until one day when I put that big flat brim on and strapped on my guitar, I knew I belonged. Authenticity came when I fully accepted who I am and what I have in my heart to share.

My simple cowboy songs have placed me in the company of cowgirls that Dale was referring to who have touched my life with their brand of courage and their indomitable pioneer spirit. Many of these women, like one of my newer friends, Kathleen, have no doubt of their cowgirl credibility with a lifetime of ranch life under her belt and a style and swagger that is unmistakable. Other friends, like my friend Donna who has just endured several months in a detention facility would hesitate to refer to herself as a cowgirl, but is cowgirl to the core when it comes to helping the vulnerable women around her that need her wisdom and resources even in the face of her own dire needs.

I have a favorite photo that captures a group of steely eyed cowgirls in the cool of a red rock overhang in South Central Utah near the Big Sandy Ranch. I’m the one with two dark braids and an unrestrained grin. We were on a ride organized by Celia Snow that was remarkable for the fact that it was an all female crew and the women in that photograph are legends in the western world, many of whom I still maintain a friendship and deep respect for. There’s swagger and confidence in the face of every woman, far away from the cloak of invisibility that life throws over women, especially women of a certain age. We were outlaws for the afternoon with no care for trips to the grocery store or doctors appointments.

There’s a large portion of my heart that wishes I could whisk every woman away for a week, a day an hour to be in the company of cowgirls. Certainly this is why I organize events like the upcoming Cowgirls Forever Camp to attend Art of the Cowgirl. Maybe every woman in a good pair of boots could feel her power in a new way and finally smile with the understanding that she is as cowgirl as they come considering Dale’s definition. Cowgirl is an attitude. It’s a title you can claim if you feel called.

Goodnight Rocky Mountain Moon - A Western Christmas Story

*Western Americana singer-songwriter Mary Kaye Holt releases her new single, “Goodnight Rocky Mountain Moon,” and announces a virtual Rocky Mountain Christmas Concert from her Nashville home.

*Shares the origins of her Christmas music, born in rural Utah while raising ten children and writing Western frontier-inspired songs.

*Reflects on her unique Western storytelling style and invites readers into a season of authenticity, cowboy culture, and heartfelt music.

Can you feel it? Christmas is in the air, my friends. Music is the way I  commemorate the season, like ornaments on the tree, each year I add a new Christmas song. This year, I’ll be releasing a brand new single as the 2nd release from my upcoming Midnight Mustang album called, “Goodnight Rocky Mountain Moon” on Thursday, December 11th. A special full lyric video will drop that morning and I  invite each of you to join me virtually that night for a Facebook Live from our home, Birdsong, for a full Rocky Mountain Christmas Concert at 7pm CST.

I started playing guitar and writing music when I was 39 years old, pregnant with my tenth child and living in a beautiful, rural community in Utah. These were my true glory years. No social media, I was a trad wife before it was trending. Our house had torn up linoleum floors and outdated furniture, but it was my creative canvas and kingdom. It was candlelit dinners around a rickety kitchen table, and reading “Cheaper by the Dozen” as boots and mittens dried by the wood burning stove. This was the world these songs were birthed in.

My Christmas songs are not “Nashville Approved”. Many of them are story songs or have such specific western references as to be almost a foreign tongue. “Santa’s Roundup” was written for my children. “No Black Haired Women” and “Going Home for Christmas” are based on true frontier stories. My new single, “Goodnight Rocky Mountain Moon” is not strictly a Christmas song, but it’s perfect for this season and holds a kind of longing that will transport you to the place that makes you feel like you’re home.

A sincere “thank you” to each of you who support me on this creative musical journey. In a world of social media slop, it’s nice to find real connection and authenticity. I look forward to a joyful and uplifting Christmas season with you! MK

Cowgirls Forever Camp 2026

Hello, Besties. Performing at the Art of the Cowgirl event last year was, dare I say it?...life changing. Art of the Cowgirl is a five day celebration of Western women who live, work, and create in the ranching and cowboy traditions. Founded by Tammy Pate, the event brings together master horsewomen, artists, makers, and musicians to share their craft, preserve Western heritage, and pass it on to the next generation. I’m honored to announce that I’ll be toting my guitar back to this year’s event hosted at Rancho Rio, Wickenburg AZ on February 24-28.

Why did this Art of the Cowgirl have such an impact on me? You have to remember that I’m a cowgirl who sings cowboy songs. Probably the fault of no one except perhaps Hollywood, men take the reins on most of what we know of cowboy culture and the makers behind it. I’ve felt the weight of this as event organizers hire a “cowboy” instead of a chick singer no matter how many bales of hay I’ve tossed over my lifetime. Last year, moving among the mothers, daughters and even whole generations of families who attended and participated was so hopeful. As a female artist whose canvas is the rural West, I felt seen. I felt heard.

Last year, I noticed that the demand to attend Art of the Cowgirl was high but housing was tricky to come by so I’m teaming up with Holly Jackson from Mountain Embers Photography and Barb Kennedy, owner and chuckwagon cook with Cowgirls Forever to help provide fun, safe and affordable “Line Camp” we’re affectionately calling Cowgirls Forever Camp. There are dry camping spots for trailers and a bunkhouse with deluxe “outhouse” with showers. Registration is $200 and includes a Thursday Night Chuck Wagon Dinner and Concert by Mary Kaye Holt (hey, I’ve heard of her), grab and go breakfast every morning and nightly campfires. An additional $45/$50 nightly camping fee is not due until the event. Our camp is a pretty 30 mile drive from Rio Rancho. If you’re interested in joining us, please send an email inquiry to our team at cowgirlsforevercamp@hotmail.com

The Story Behind the Song, God Bless America

Hello, NashWest Besties!

I started playing guitar and writing my first songs when I was 39 years old and pregnant with my 10th child. I was living in the rural West and those six guitar strings opened up my whole world. In those first few years, I entered my daughter, Millie and myself in a county wide singing contest. We both won our respective age brackets and the prize was getting to open for Little Texas at the 4th of July Celebration.

For this occasion, I sewed us matching red sequin tops and created a special arrangement of the song, God Bless America for Millie and I to sing as a duet. The night was magical and then I largely forgot the arrangement I had made until a few years later when Millie and I started singing together more often, but that was not the end either. My band, Gone with the West, also performs this song together and we were in Colorado at the Egyptian Theater when my friend, Hans, heard the song, was touched by it and became an important part of the team that recorded the song in Nashville with Duane Sciacqua.

Written by immigrant songwriter Irving Berlin in 1918, ‘God Bless America’ began as a humble soldier’s prayer for peace during World War I. Berlin tucked it away for twenty years — and when he brought it back in 1938, America was ready to hear it. The song found its voice through Kate Smith, whose powerful radio performance on Armistice Day 1938 inspired a nation searching for hope.

Psalm 42:8 reminds us that song and prayer are inseparable, “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me — a prayer to the God of my life.” When Irving Berlin wrote “God Bless America,” he offered not just a patriotic tune but a prayer for divine guidance and protection. Like the psalmist, Berlin turned his thoughts into melody, expressing gratitude and dependence on something higher than himself. Particularly the line, “Stand beside her and guide her” is asking God to remain present through the nation’s trials. In that sense, “God Bless America” isn’t only a song we sing; it’s a living prayer that continues to rise whenever voices join together in hope for the land we love.

How fitting that “God Bless America” will be the first single released from my album, Midnight Mustang. Release day is Tuesday, November 11 which is Veterans Day 2025 and the music video posted that day will be honoring our veterans. The best way you can help show support is to listen to the video and share it with your friends on social media and by text.

The Midnight Mustang album will be released one song at a time as an effort on my part to figure out how to give each song some time in the spotlight and allow for more time as the last songs are still being finished.

Love, MK

Paid in Full

Happy Easter, Nash West Besties!

Something happened to me yesterday that I can’t get out of my mind. I was enjoying a nice lunch with my mother that included some classic southern favorites…fried chicken, sweet potatoes, creamy coleslaw and fried green tomatoes at a beloved local eatery, The Loveless Cafe. She and I were talking about life, grandchildren, health and politics. I had hardly looked at the server when he placed the ticket on the table, but when I picked it up these words were penned over the top, “Good Friday. Paid in Full. Thank God! 2 Corinthians 9:15.”

My first thought was shamefully, “Do we look needy?” followed quickly by “We need to leave a big tip” but then this feeling came over me that I’ll do my best to describe. I felt awe. This gentleman did something kind that my mother and I did nothing to deserve. I wanted to pay. I wanted the equal exchange of goods and services but this was the economy of heaven…grace for payment, fishes and loaves, a good Samaritan in the form of a server.

Life teaches us some hard lessons. We learn from hard experience that appliances break down, good friends can betray you, we don’t all agree on politics, we have weaknesses that we wish we didn’t have, and there’s simply not enough time to get everything done and still binge watch whatever we want. I used to tell my children when they were whining or complaining, “Well, get used to it. Life’s not fair and then you die.” Great mom, huh?

Truth is, life has always felt overwhelming to me. From girlhood, my one true and lasting comfort and touchstone is my relationship with Jesus. Prayer has been a reliable and real comfort to me and when I think about Jesus I feel what I felt at Loveless Cafe yesterday, I feel awe. Here I am enjoying an incredible life, doing what I love, married to a wonderful husband, a proud mama of grown children and treasuring precious time with my aging parents and living in a city that I love. On this Easter Sunday I feel God placing the bill in front of me and across the top is written, “Paid in Full.”

2 Corinthians 9:15 reads, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.”

I love you all and am so grateful for the music and friendship that connects us.

A Woman's Heart

Hello, NashWest Besties.

This last week, as I laid in bed with the warmth of my husband next to me, I was silently praying. I thought of the phone calls that are now the reason we keep our phones by our bed. Good news or bad news, it’s all in God's hands. As I had this thought, my phone rang. I scrambled to answer and found my daughter, Millie, on the other line sharing the announcement of the birth of her and her husband's precious new baby boy.

So, today to honor my daughter and to tip my hat to all of my female friends I’ll share this poem I recently wrote for Women’s Heart Awareness.

(the picture I've included is of me with my grandson, Grimm)

A Woman's Heart

A woman’s beating heart is the first distant sound of drums in the darkness that reassure…

You are. My child.

You are. My child.

A woman’s hopeful heart is a dream catcher opening wide to all the beautiful bright things that whisper…

This is. For you.

This is. For you.

A woman’s determined heart is her body’s strongest muscle as she daily bears her burdens, grits her teeth and hisses…

Girl, you’ve. Got this.

Girl, you’ve. Got this.

A woman’s truthful heart is forever fifteen no matter how many candles on the cake it will gleefully acknowledge…

I am. Time less.

I am. Time less.

Low Amount of Rodeos

Hello, NashWest Guys and Girls! Are you ready for new music? I’m over-the-moon excited to announce that on Sunday evening I’ll be posting a news release concerning my new album project! This will be my first album recorded and produced in Nashville and frankly, I’m excited and nervous. I’m reminded of a funny quote my band-sister, Micki Fuhrman, sent me. It said, “I didn’t realize I was supposed to know how to do everything by my second rodeo. Seems like a very low amount of rodeos.”

In terms of rodeos, this is my 7th studio album which seems like a low amount of rodeos to have everything figured out, but I’m very proud of each of my albums and am honored to record these songs that God has placed in my heart. Recording and producing a song actually has a lot of rodeo parallels.

Songs come in like rough stock. They buck and snort and want to go where they want to go. Many times I sit down to write and tentatively reach out for the right words only to be rebuffed by any word that doesn’t ring true. A lyric will suddenly feel “honest” and then you write as fast as you can before it’s gone.

Songs are best captured with team roping. No artist can be both header and heeler. It really does take a team of talented professionals to take a song where it needs to go. I think I’ve found a great Nashville team to work with and am excited to make music in Music City.

There are many events I’m looking forward to this Fall including my 4th wedding anniversary with Gary, the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering with my Gone with the West sisters, and the Girl Meets West Retreat in December in Escalante, Utah, but this Fall will be forever made memorable by the making of this new album. I feel grateful for this rodeo that God has given me to ride again, to swing my loop, to cowgirl up and chase my dreams. My deepest gratitude to each of you for helping make these dreams come true!

Peace, Love and Spurs..

Fall 2024

Hello, NashWest Guys & Girls! Are you ready for Fall? Today, I added a bunch of new events and adventures to my Fall and Winter schedule with more in the round pen getting worked out before they make it to the calendar. My intent is to joyfully bring you the glitz of Nashville with the grit of the West in music, events and products…thus “NashWest”.

The biggest and best event on the horizon is the Girl Meets West Women’s Retreat that will be held at the Slot Canyons Inn in Escalante, Utah this December 5-8th. Our theme is “A Heart of Peace” and will be a true retreat from the cares of the world and will feature laughter, workshops, shopping, sight-seeing and music. I still have some rooms available and am excited to see who will fill those spots! If you live in Utah, you can just drive in. If you live out of state and have always wanted to see Utah’s famous red rocks, then we have a group of women flying in to coordinate travel plans with. The event fee/deposit is $250 with the remaining amount of $250 to $500 due at the event depending on the luxury room you choose. This includes food! Amazing! You can purchase your event fee/deposit TODAY here on my website under the Girl Meets West Retreat tab.

Not only am I excited for upcoming solo concert events, I’m also honored to be part of the Gone with the West band who will be performing on some big stages in the next 3 months at the Fort Wallace Living History Weekend, the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the Mustang Heritage Foundation Hall of Fame and the International Western Music Association Conference.

My husband, Gary Holt, and I own Equestrian Legacy Radio which has been hosting 3 live shows/podcasts a week for 11 years! Gary is the pioneer behind these broadcasts and his love of horses and western music is ultimately what brought him into my life 4 years ago. We continue this legacy together with our shows, Live From Nashville, Saddle Up America and The Campfire Cafe. I’m including the shows on my website schedule so you can saddle up and ride along with us.

Instant Results

Hello, NashWest Cowgirls. Let’s talk about instant results. So many good things take time, but there are some instant miracles available to us at any moment. I find that leaning into the good of the moment I’m in leads to the greater good of my life. Here are the life changing things you can do even as you read this post.

Smile. Even if it’s a rather grotesque effort, the muscle memory of creating a smile shakes up the brain circuitry and can instantly alter our vibe. I wake up and smile. Girl, if you’re struggling today, please just smile.

Posture. Even as I write this, I sat up a little straighter. I feel the power of this slight change of my body in my mind. Raise your phone up so you don’t lean down. Don’t worry about looking uppity. Girl, you’re a queen. How are you going to keep your crown on slouching like that?

Music. As I write this I’m listening to Mozart. I also suggest listening to an artist named Mary Kaye Holt. I heard her music is pretty good. Music elevates thought and mood. You can access music from your phone or if you want some old school vibes, I have a new “Play Mary Kaye Package” on my website that comes with an adorable portable CD player and four albums.

Food. Mindfully enjoying good food can instantly elevate your life. There is no bad food, just mindless habits of eating too much. Eat what you want, enjoy every bite and stop eating when you’re comfortably full. Crazy concept, I know. Fixing your relationship with food can be done in an instant and will make you feel instantly hopeful.

Move. Our bodies get accustomed to the same motions…walk to the kitchen, take out the dog, answer emails…but our bodies can bring so much instant joy when we take time to move in new ways…dancing, stretching, skipping, and even long, lingering kisses!

If you like this post, please share. I love when social media elevates and connects us!

Learn to Love the Ride

Hello, NashWest Guys and Girls. Have you ever felt frustrated with a person who says they want to achieve something and then sporadically or never does anything to achieve the declared outcome? Are you that person? Why do we do that?

You can’t achieve the outcome without loving the process. Ouch. That’s the truth. Think deeply about what you say you want. Do you want a beautiful romantic relationship? How about a healthy, trim figure? How about land or home ownership? Do you want to travel? Now, think about the process of achieving those things, the devotion, the time away from Netflix, the donuts and cookies left uneaten, the chances that you’ll need to take, the fact that half your closet will need to be available for your new love, and the fact that the silly Amazon purchases should probably be put towards a travel fund.

Don’t say you want something without a good hard look at the price you will need to pay for that outcome. Fear not, friend. You have the best partner in the world to help you. God, the creator of the universe, declares that He’ll ride shotgun. Ask God to help you love the process.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

Isaiah 40:29

Taylor Swift has a career that astounds me. She takes chances, works like a maniac and loves her fans fiercely. Living in Nashville, I get to hear behind the scenes stories about the big stars in music. Taylor has a lot of respect in Music City. She didn't just swipe on some red lipstick, have a few hits and expect to fill arenas. She began with the end in mind. She fell in love with the process.

Why are you not doing what you say you want to do? Because you haven’t fallen in love with the process and guess what? That's OK. Maybe you need to change direction to something you feel authentically passionate about. I don't want to live at the gym, so I'm at peace with my curves. I'm not invited to brandings to rope. I'm invited to sing. I know my strengths.

Having said that, I'm going to issue a warning. Sometimes God has gives us a mission, we've claimed it and then we get mired down and stuck. Today is the day to turn up your collar, screw your hat down, tell ‘em to open the chute and give a mighty “Whoop!” to the number you’ve drawn. This is the ride that's taking you to where you say you want to be. Learn to love the ride, darlin'.
